Leaders' Quote Series - supporting the work domains from Action Area One of Compassion in Practice

Jon Rouse –Director General of Social Care, Local Government and Care Partnerships – Department of Health

“I am really pleased that Compassion in Practice emphasises the value of nurses and care staff working in care settings.  It is great that Action Area 1 focusses on Helping people to stay independent, maximising well-being and improving health outcomes and recognises the complexities of providing integrated care across the health and social care system. I look forward to the collaboration between teams in the Department of Health and other partners working together to improve quality of experience for those in our care.

The best area to look for examples of integrated health and social care is within nursing homes. In these quality homes, Registered Nurses led the delivery of compassionate care whilst enhancing peoples' well being. This is despite these nurses seemingly being forgotten by the health and social care at large. Health bodies focus on the development of Allied Health Professionals, Doctors and either hospital based nurses or community nurses yet they frequently exclude Care Home nurses. Social Care bodies focus on the development of Social workers and care staff. It would be great to see Jon Rouse highlight the great work achieved in nursing homes by Registered Nurses who showcase real integrated care.
