Views sought on new vision for nursing

Posted by: , Posted on: - Categories: Home

A proposed new vision for nursing, midwifery and care-giving sets out the values of compassionate care and asks how they can be developed further across health and social care.

Over recent months, Viv Bennett, Director of Nursing for the Department of Health, and Jane Cummings, Chief Nursing Officer for England, have been talking to care givers across the country to start to understand what  the new vision and strategy for nurses, midwives and care-givers should look like, and what values unite the profession.

They now want to hear your views on the issues contained in the draft vision to inform the strategy for the development of the nursing, midwifery and care-giving professions.

Your comments will influence the next steps to set a course for the nursing, midwifery and care-giving contribution to develop the culture of compassionate care and meeting health needs for the coming years.

The vision asks:

  • How can we recruit with the values in mind?
  • How can we promote better public health?
  • How can we make sure nurses have courage to stand up and complain when needed?
  • How can care-givers use new technologies where people want them and improve the way they communicate?

Commenting on the vision, Viv Bennett, Director of Nursing, said:

‘I am constantly reminded of the strengths of our profession and impressed by the quality of care we provide. But we can do more. Prevention and early intervention are ever more important and there is even more we can do to promote public health. We now have an opportunity to change what we do for the better, and I look forward to hearing the views of patients and the profession.’

Jane Cummings, Chief Nursing Officer, said:

‘The vision has been in development since my appointment to the role of Chief Nursing Officer. Our professions provide high quality care day-in and day-out across health and social care. We want to develop this further and support the professions as they evolve and respond to changing needs in society.

‘This is the starting point – we now need to work together to develop the vision and the actions needed to make it a reality.’

Health Minister Dr Dan Poulter said:

‘The Prime Minister has made nursing one of the Government’s top priorities and we look forward to working with the profession and patients on this. We want to do all we can to support nurses and midwives – they have one of the most demanding and sensitive roles, commanding our respect and support.’
